Confirming payments from bank messages
When a bank message arrives from a merchant tied to one of your commitments, Surrah doesn't assume the charge is that commitment's payment. It asks you first.
The same merchant can charge you for more than one thing. A usage top-up from the company behind your monthly subscription looks, in a bank message, exactly like the subscription. If Surrah counted every one as a payment, a single top-up could mark the month paid and push your due date on.
Where the question shows up
- A notification: "Is this your Claude Code payment?", with the merchant and the amount. Tap it and the commitment opens on that question.
- The commitment: a To confirm section near the top, with one card per charge. Each card shows the date of the bank message, the amount in the currency you were charged, and the merchant.
- The expense: open the charge from your expenses and the same question sits under the amount.
- The Commitments list: a small green dot next to a commitment's name means a charge is waiting for you.
Answer wherever you see it first. The other places update on their own.
Yes or Not this
- Yes records the charge as this commitment's payment, exactly as if you'd linked it yourself. It shows in the history as Linked expense, and a loan, credit card or instalment balance drops. If this is the cycle the commitment was waiting on, the due date moves to the next one.
- Not this keeps the charge as an ordinary expense and leaves the commitment untouched. Surrah won't ask about that charge again.
Neither answer adds or removes an expense. The charge is in your spending either way.
Tapped Not this by mistake? Open the expense, tap ⋯, and choose Pays a commitment.
Replace or Keep
If the commitment's payment is recorded On the due date, Surrah may already have recorded this cycle on its due date, at the amount you set. When the real bank message arrives after that, the question changes to Replace the automatic record with this charge? The card shows both amounts: what Surrah recorded, and what the bank took.
- Replace puts the real charge in place of the automatic record. The balance is corrected to what you actually paid. The due date stays where it is, because that cycle was already counted.
- Keep leaves the automatic record as it is, and the charge stays an ordinary expense.
When Surrah doesn't ask
- The cycle is already paid. If you've paid this cycle already (marked it paid, linked a charge, or answered Yes), a further charge from that merchant stays an ordinary expense and no question appears. Link it by hand if it really was a payment.
- Savings goals. Goals are never matched to bank messages.
- The payment is recorded From bank messages. See Choosing how the payment is recorded below.
Questions don't expire
A question waits until you answer it. It goes away by itself when it no longer applies: you delete the expense, you link it to a commitment yourself, or you pause, cancel or complete the commitment. Answer one that has gone and Surrah tells you the charge was already handled.
Until you answer, the payment isn't recorded
A question is not a payment.
- If the payment is recorded Manually, the commitment shows as late once its due date passes, and stays late until you record the payment. Answering Yes records it and clears the late state.
- If it's recorded On the due date, Surrah records the cycle on the due date as usual. Answer afterwards and you'll be offered Replace. The cycle never counts twice.
Choosing how the payment is recorded
Open the commitment and, under Settings, tap How is the payment recorded? The same choice sits under Recording payments when you edit the commitment. There are three options:
- Manually — you record each payment yourself. When a matching bank charge arrives, Surrah asks if it's this payment.
- On the due date — Surrah records the payment itself when the due date arrives, whether or not a bank message turns up. If a matching charge arrives later, it asks whether the charge should replace that record. It's free.
- From bank messages (Surrah+) — a matching charge counts as the payment without asking, and shows in the history as Auto-matched from SMS. If no charge has arrived by the due date, Surrah records the cycle then, and swaps in the real charge when it arrives, leaving the due date alone.
A few things to know:
- From bank messages only appears on commitments Surrah has tied to a merchant from your bank messages. Other commitments offer Manually and On the due date.
- The choice is per commitment.
- Switching to From bank messages doesn't answer questions that are already waiting. Those stay for you.
- On the free plan, From bank messages shows with a Surrah+ badge. Tapping it opens Surrah+ and changes nothing. If your Surrah+ subscription ends, Surrah goes back to asking, and keeps recording the payment on the due date. Subscribe again and matching resumes, unless you've picked another option in the meantime.
