Pay extra toward a loan

Paid more than your instalment this month, or put a lump sum toward a loan? Record it as an Extra payment. It comes straight off the balance, so the loan finishes sooner, and your regular instalment carries on exactly as before.

Where to find it

Open a loan, an instalment plan or a credit card that still has a balance, and tap Pay extra. It's under the balance summary, and in the commitment's More menu. Enter the amount, pick the date you paid (today or earlier), and confirm.

The amount is in the commitment's own currency, the same one its balance is shown in.

What changes, and what doesn't

  • The balance drops by exactly what you paid. If that clears it, the loan is marked as paid off.
  • The instalment stays the same. Your next payment is still the usual amount.
  • The due date stays where it is. An extra payment isn't the instalment, so it doesn't move the schedule. If the instalment is late, it's still late until you pay it.
  • It doesn't count as this month's payment. The month still waits for its instalment: on the commitment, in Left to pay on the Commitments screen, and on the home-screen widget. If the payment is recorded On the due date, Surrah still records the instalment on that date, and a bank message for the instalment is still matched as usual.

See what it did

Right after you pay, a line under the balance shows the effect on your payoff date, for example: Payoff moved Aug 2028 → Mar 2028 · 5 payments fewer. If the payment wasn't enough to take a whole instalment off the end, it reads Payoff still Mar 2028. The payment then sits in the history as Extra payment.

What if I pay more each time?

Under the balance there's also a slider. Drag it to add a little to every instalment and see when the loan would be paid off, and how many payments you'd save. It's free and it's only a projection: nothing is saved and no payment is recorded. To actually pay more each month, open Edit on the commitment and raise the amount. Then, on a loan, bring Ends on earlier, or on an instalment plan, lower Number of payments, until Balance ≈ shows what you still owe.

Made a mistake?

Open the history and undo the extra payment. The money goes back onto the balance. See Undo a payment.
